Tsur or Sela, Rock - Psalm 28:1

The use of Rock as a name for God is found throughout the psalms, but also in other references like the song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32 and in Habakkuk 1 as well. There are two Hebrew words which are translated as ‘rock’ in English, Tsur and Sela. Both of the words denote more than just a rock. These both indicate a large immoveable cliff or boulder, sharp and strong, mighty.

It is easy to see how comforting it was for David to call upon the Rock in all of his battles and fighting, in his hiding from Saul and troubles he brought upon himself. Rock is unmoving, unchanging. Rock is hiding place, foundation of buildings, walls of castles and refuge in storms. Rock is the comfort we need when we are tossed too and fro.

It is interesting that the name Rock is used in psalms, Habakkuk, and the song of Moses. They are all expressions of close relationship with God and a personal name. It is a name that they have developed for God, rather than one that is proclaimed for or by God. Rock comes from an intimacy of knowing God personally and understanding who he is. It is a personal nickname. Habakkuk 1:12 and Psalm 28:1 say ‘my Rock’ and Deuteronomy 32:3-4 ‘our God, he is the Rock…’.

I see these verses as an invitation to intimacy with God. Even in the Old Testament, the time when we consider that no one had unfettered access to God because Jesus had not yet intervened for man, even then, God’s people had intimacy with him. He calls us to know him and seek him in all we do, think and feel. He sought us in the garden, continued to seek us out and today still waits patiently for our approach. He is my Rock. Let him be your Rock, Banner and Miracle Maker.

I have enjoyed looking at the names and characteristics that are exalted of God through the Old Testament. I think it has deepened my understanding of who He is. I hope it has for you as well.
