Session 6: I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life – John 14:1-15

This post is part of an 8-part series from the book of John. The study looks at Jesus’s ‘I AM’ passages from John and passages in the Old Testament which echo the heart of the message of Jesus and reveal the way in which the Old Testament has reflected the name. They open with introductory questions, reading the passage, and then some observation and interpretation questions follow. The sessions end with personal application questions. Please feel free to share an application response or comment on the study itself in the section below.

Introduction

Most of us have either gotten lost heading to a new place or we have been given nebulous directions to assist us in arriving at a new location. Tell how this made you feel and what you did about it. What condition were you in when you arrived?

Discuss the relationship between belief, trust, and truth.

Read John 14:1-15.

Reading Questions

Jesus says he is the way. Where does the way lead? What does following the way require?

What truth does Jesus embody?

How is life imparted according to the passage?

What are the results of belief according to Jesus in this passage?

What can we learn about prayer in this passage?

Old Testament Links

Read the following passages and consider how they present the way, truth, and life in the Old Testament.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Psalm 1:1-3

Psalm 25:1-15

Psalm 56:12-13

Psalm 139:23-24

Isaiah 35:1-10

Daniel 12:2-3

Read Exodus 26:31-35 and Matthew 27:51-53. What do these passages indicate about Jesus’s statement, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life’?

Application

If you had been present for the events of Matthew 27:51-53, how would you have responded? If it happened again today, what would you do?

Share the results of belief from the reading questions, as you have seen them in your own life.

How has the truth changed you, or sanctified you, as you have known him?

What can believers do to know, or better know, the way, truth, and life?
