Session 8: I AM He – John 4, 6, 8, 13, 18

This post is part of an 8-part series from the book of John. The study looks at Jesus’s ‘I AM’ passages from John and passages in the Old Testament which echo the heart of the message of Jesus and reveal the way in which the Old Testament has reflected the name. They open with introductory questions, reading the passage, and then some observation and interpretation questions follow. The sessions end with personal application questions. Please feel free to share an application response or comment on the study itself in the section below.

Introduction

How do you introduce yourself compared to how others introduce you?

What would you like Jesus to explain to you?

Read

Read each of these passages separately and respond to the reading questions: John 4:5-26, 6:16-21, 8:21-24, 8:48-59, 13:18-20, 18:3-8.

Reading Questions

In each passage, note who the audience is and their response to Jesus saying, ‘I am’ or ‘I am he’. What does the response tell you of their understanding of the statement?

What does Jesus declare of himself each time he makes the statement? Is there a characteristic that is emphasized in the encounter?

Old Testament Links

Exodus 3:9-15. What are the three names that God gives for himself in verses 14 and 15?

What do these names say of his nature?

God says to tell the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you’. How does Jesus also carry this out?

Application

The John 4 and 6 passages are revelations to few people. How has Jesus revealed himself to you personally?

How have Jesus’s statements in these 8 sessions revealed the Father to be?

What is your image of the Father? Has it changed over the course of the study?

I am has sent me to you ex 3-14
