Trust in God

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, trust is defined as ‘assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.’ Five little letters, trust. Such a big thing.

Based on this definition of trust, when we consider trusting God, we need to consider the character, ability, strength and truth of Him. I am frankly overwhelmed by where or how to start talking of the character of God. Perhaps we should begin with the start of our relationship with Him.

Trust in His Character

We believe in God and accept his Son as our savior, Jesus who died and rose again to reconcile us to the Father, who then sent the Holy Spirit to live in us in power. So, we have already accepted His love, the reason for sending the Son. We have accepted his goodness in reconciling us to him; He cares so much for us that he chose separation from His Son for a time, so we were not separated from Him for eternity. Yeah, He cares. What else to say about his character? Perhaps we could look to his names, as we did in September 2019. Our classic reference might be John 3:16-17,’ This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. (MSG)’ He loves us.

Trust in His Ability and Strength

Ability is next. We are talking about the Creator of the Universe. Need I say more? Is he able? YES. In Isaiah 45:11-12 (MSG), God himself addresses the question of ability: “Do you question who or what I’m making? Are you telling me what I can or cannot do? I made earth, and I created man and woman to live on it. I handcrafted the skies and direct all the constellations in their turnings.’

As for strength, in our statements of faith and in most church creeds, we acknowledge that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. What more could we want as a demonstration of strength? I mean, we already said that he created the universe. He is able to do immensely more than we can imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

Trust in the Truth of God

Let us consider then the last: truth. In factual reality, we have no way of taking a picture. We have a whole book of His acts, his story of love for us. Is He real? I have felt Him. He is real. I don’t think you would be reading this if you felt otherwise. In Romans 1:19-20, Paul says that God has made Himself known to us since the beginning and there is no question as to who He is, His nature and power.

Do I trust God?

That leaves us with the simple question of ‘do I trust God?’ Do I trust Him fully? In each and every aspect of my life? Of my day? Do I trust Him to change circumstances? Do I trust Him to change my heart in these circumstances? Let’s talk about all this over the coming month.
