Why Christ Came: to defeat Satan

Jesus came to destroy the power of Satan

Why did Jesus come?

The power of Jesus to overcome not only death, but the one who holds death over us is amazing. The power of death no longer holds us, for Christ has overcome death and Satan who held that power. Hebrews 2:14 says ‘he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil.’ It is impossible for me to imagine a helpless babe in the manger defeating Satan and the hold over death that he had. When Christmas comes, I will celebrate the coming of Christ, but it will not be a celebration of his birth. Not this year. I want to celebrate the power that arrived with his coming, the power he wielded while he was here, the power that defeated death and bound Satan. Since the devil has been destroyed, I want to live in the victory of that win, as an overcomer. That word destroy says it all for me, there is no one left on the battlefield, he is not just hanging his head and walking away, he is done. We are on the winning team! Our victory trophy is the power over death. I yearn for the celebration of his having come and our corresponding victory.

He came to defeat the power of Satan and the devil’s hold over death; that’s why Christ came.
