Why Christ Came: to obey God

Jesus came in obedience to the Father.

Why did Jesus come?

Jesus came quite simply because his father told him to. John 20:21 says that the Father sent him. We know that he struggled many times with the various missions that he carried out while here: tempted by the devil, frustrated by people’s disbelief, even asking not to fulfill it all in the Garden of Gethsemane. Yet, he did all because God asked it of him, out of obedience. The recognition of the importance of the Father’s will and the Father’s requests is also what we need to do. In fact, the full verse from John 20:21 is ‘Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”’ As Jesus was sent, so we are sent. It is challenging to know in every moment what it is that God wants for and from us. I suppose that is why so much of Jesus’s time was spent in prayer, talking with God. It isn’t easy in these busy lives of ours, but it is a rich reward and incredible blessing when we choose to spend alone time with God.  

He came to obey God; that’s why Christ came.
