The books of wisdom in the Bible are those that address the big questions of life, for example good vs. evil, or the righteous vs. the foolish, and so on. They also exhort us to follow the law of the Lord. The style of the wisdom is not instructional, but more reflective and meditational.

Psalms of thanks are perhaps the most spontaneous that we produce in our own lives. What do they look like in the Bible?

The psalms of praise remind us of how worthy God is of all praise and honor and glory.

Psalms of lament offer an outstanding model for how we can approach God with our issues and stand firm in Him with the knowledge that he is trustworthy.

Genre can help us understand what the scripture reveals about God and how to read that type of book. Reading a historical account, like the encounter of David and Abigail, is different from reading Psalm 42. By using genre to understand what we are reading, we have another tool to interpret it well.

Obstacles to effective Bible study may lead us to have head knowledge of God, but not heart knowledge, and certainly not change. The antidote to these hindrances is unfortunately not easy but is simple.
